We are all set to start the first week of the Belly of the Beast Tote Crochet Along!
Let’s dive into it!
This tote is based on the construction of the Fat Bottom Bag but we are going to be making this using Tunisian Crochet.
You will need about 500 gms of bulky yarn and 9mm or 10 mm Tunisian crochet hook. We made ours using Vardhman Cottonplus. Each 100 gm of Vardhman Cottonplus comes as 71 mts / 77yds ball.
This yarn is loosely plied yet holds its shape very well thus making it ideal for making bags. The yarn is a cotton acrylic blend hence will hold up well is our belief:)
You will also need a meter of fabric if you want to line the bag and a zipper 15″or more in length for the bag closure.
We used single colour for the bag and a contrast colour for the edge and bag handles. You are most welcome to change this to suit your palette:) You can also make a scrap bag by using random colours! If you are substituting the suggested yarn , please be mindful to change the hook size according to the yarn chosen. Also be aware that the bag measurements will change while using a different yarn.
The general tip while using Tunisian Crochet is to use a hook that is two sizes bigger than what you would normally use for the yarn you have chosen. The reason being , it results in a nicer fabric plus it helps in controlling the curl that is normally associated with Tunisian Crochet.
Well, now that the general instructions are out of the way, let’s begin!
