Let’s delve into the pattern !

Navaratri Mandala

Materials needed

4ply worsted weight cotton yarn

5mm crochet hook

Yarn needle

Scissors

Gauge : Rounds 1 – 3 = 4″ in diameter

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Beg     –          Beginning

BegCl –          Beginning Cluster

Ch       –          Chain

Cl                              Cluster

Dc       –          Double crochet

Dc3tog – Double crochet 3 together

FpSc   –          Front Post Single crochet

FpDc  –        Front Post Double crochet

P            –        Picot worked as follows Ch3, sl st into the top the stitch just made

PM – Place Marker

Sc2tog – Single crochet 2 together

Sk                   –          Skip

Sl st    –          Slip stitch

SM – Stitch Marker

Sp                   –          Space

St                    –          Stitch

Yo       –          Yarn over

Difficulty: Intermediate

Notes:

1: Ch3 counts as dc unless otherwise stated.

2:  Ch1 does not count as stitch.

3.  Beginning cluster is worked as follows – Ch2(counts as first dc), (yo, insert hook in the same sp, yo pull up a loop, yo pull through 2 loops)2 times, yo, pull through all loops.

4.  Cluster is worked as follows –  (yo, insert hook in sp indicated, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops)3 times, yo, pull through all loops.

5. Dc3tog is worked as follows – make one incomplete dc in each of the 3 sts indicated, yo, pull through all loops.

6. Sc2tog is worked as follows – insert hook in sp or st indicated, yo , pull up a loop, insert hook in the next st or sp indicated, yo , pull up a loop, yo, pull through all 3 loops.

7. Front Post Dc is worked as follows – yo, insert hook from front to back and front again around the leg of the st indicated, yo, pull up a loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) 2 times.

8. Front Post Sc is worked as follows – insert hook from front to back and front again around the leg of the st indicated, yo pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops.

9. Stitch count is given at the end of each round.

10. If you are not changing colour at the end of every round, take care to place your stitch in the right stitch or space.

Instructions

Day 1 – Colour White

Round 1: Using Colour 1 of your choice and 5 mm hook , in a magic circle, ch4 (counts as first dc + 1), (dc, ch1) 8 more times. Close the magic ring and join with sl st to the 3rd chain of the beginning ch4. Fasten off – 9 dc , 9 ch1 sp.

Round 2: Join Colour 2 with sl st in any ch 1 space, (begcl, ch1, cl) in the same ch1 sp, (cl, ch1, cl) in each ch1 sp around. Join with sl st to the begcl. Fasten off – 18 clusters, 9 ch1 sp.

Round 3: Join Colour 3 with sl st in any ch1 sp, ch1 ( does not count as st), (sc, ch1, sc) in the same ch1 sp, 1 FpSc in each of the next 2 sts, * (sc, ch1, sc) in the next ch1 sp, 1 FpSc in each of the next 2 sts, repeat from * around. Join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off – 18 sc, 18 FpSc, 9 ch1 sp.

Here is a close up of the first 3 rounds in 3 shades of the white family – cream, off white and white 🙂

My daughter decided to make hers using the beautiful variegated cotton yarn from YarnAmour She chose 9 colours and will be changing colour for each day of Navaratri!

Day 2 – Colour Red

Round 4: Join Colour 4 with sl st in any ch1 sp, ch1(does not count as st), (sc, ch3, sc) in the same sp, pm in this ch3 sp just made, ch3, sk the next 2 sts, * (sc, ch3, sc) in the next ch1 sp, ch3, sk the next 2 sts, repeat from * around. Join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off – 18 sc, 18 ch3 sp.

Round 5: Join Colour 5 with sl st in the ch3 sp that has the sm, ch1(does not count as st) 1 sc in the same sp, sk the next st, (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in the next ch3 sp, sk the next st, * 1 sc in the next ch sp, sk the next st, (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in the next ch3 sp, sk the next st, repeat from * around. Join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off – 54 dc, 9 sc, 9 ch3 sp.

Round 6: Join Colour 6 with sl st in any ch2 sp, ch1 (does not count as st), 3 sc in the same sp, sk the next 3sts, (dc, ch5, dc) in the next sc, sk the next 3 sts, * 3 sc in the next ch2 sp, sk the next 3sts, (dc, ch5, dc) in the next sc, sk the next 3 sts, repeat from * around. Join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off – 18 dc, 27 sc, 9 ch5 sp.

The colour 4 seems similar to colour 5 but trust me it is a shade brighter :p)

Day 3 – Colour Blue

Round 7: Join Colour 7 with sl st in any ch5 sp, ch3(counts as first dc), (3 dc, ch2, 4 dc) in the same sp, sk the next st, dc3tog in the next 3 sts, sk the next st, *(4dc, ch2, 4dc) in the next ch5 sp, sk the next st, dc3tog in the next 3 sts, sk the next st , repeat from * around. Join with sl st to the 3rd ch of the beg ch3. Fasten off – 72 dc, 9 dc3tog, 9 ch2 sp.

Round 8: Join Colour 8 with sl st in the first dc of the previous round, ch3(counts as the first dc), (ch1, dc in the next st) 3 times, pm in the first ch1 sp, ch1, (dc, ch1, dc) in the next ch2 sp, (ch1, dc in the next st) 4 times, ch1, 1 FpDc in the next st, * (ch1, dc in the next st) 4 times, ch1, (dc, ch1, dc) in the next ch2 sp, (ch1, dc in the next st) 4 times, ch1, 1 FpDc in the next st, repeat from * around. At the end of the round , ch1, join with sl st to the 3rd ch of the beg ch3. Fasten off – 90 dc, 9 FpDc, 99 ch1 sp.

Round 9: Join Colour 9 with sl st in the ch1 sp with the sm, ch1 (does not count as st), sc in the same sp, (ch1, sc in the next ch1 sp) 3 times, ch1, 3sc in the next ch1 sp, (ch1, sc in the next ch1 sp) 4 times, ch1, sc2tog in the next 2 ch1 sp, * (ch1, sc in the next ch1 sp) 4 times, ch1, 3sc in the next ch1 sp, (ch1, sc in the next ch1 sp) 4 times, ch1, sc2tog in the next 2 ch1 sp, repeat from * around. Join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off – 99 sc, 9 sc2tog, 90 ch1 sp.
