Instructions

Hexagon 1

Round 1: In a magic circle , ch3(counts as first dc), 2dc, ch1, (3dc, ch1) 5 times. Close the magic circle and join with sc to top of beg ch3(the last sc counts as one ch1 space) -6 3dc groups , 6 ch1 sp.

Alternately, you can ch4, join to the first ch to form a ring and then make ch3(counts as first dc), 2 dc in the ring, ch1, (3dc. ch1) 5 times. Join with sc to the top of beg ch3.

Round 2: Beg Sh in the last ch1 sp of the previous round, ch1, * Sh in the next ch1 sp, ch1*, repeat from * …*5 times, End Sh in the ch1 sp where you did the beg Sh- 6 Shells , 6 ch1 sp.

Note : The End Sh completes the first Sh of 3dc, ch1 3dc. The sc join creates the last ch1 sp which from now on will be the first ch1 sp into which you will start the rounds. The ch1 sp of the shells are not mentioned in the stitch count given at the end of each row instruction.

Round 3: Beg Sh in the first ch1 sp, ch1, (3dc in the next ch1 sp, ch1, Sh in the next ch1 sp, ch1)5 times, 3dc in the next ch1 sp, ch1, End Sh in the same sp as the Beg Sh – 6 shells, 6 3dc groups, 12 ch1 sp.

Round 4: Beg Sh in the first ch1 sp, ch1, [(3dc in the next ch1 sp, ch1)2 times, Sh in the next Sh, ch1]5 times, (3dc in the next ch1 sp, ch1)2 times, End Sh in the same sp as Beg Sh – 6 shells, 12 3 dc groups, 18 ch1 sp.

Round 5 : Beg Sh in the first ch1 sp, ch1, [(3dc in the next ch1 sp, ch1), repeat (…) until you reach the ch1 space in the next shell, Sh in the next Sh, ch1], repeat [..] around till you reach the last side of the hexagon, (3dc in the next ch1 sp, ch1), repeat (…) until you reach the space where you made the Beg Sh, End Sh in the same sp as Beg Sh – 6 shells, 18 3 dc groups, 24 ch1 sp.

Repeat Round 5 until you get 1/4th the chest measurement when you fold the hexagon to form the shape of the numeral 7 as shown below. The open ends of the hexagon are at the shoulder and front button band and at the bottom of the piece. The starting point of the tape measure in the picture below is where we started our hexagons.

Every repeat of round 5 adds one 3dc group per side of the hexagon.

As you can see we stopped at the combined width of both hexagons atleast 6″ short of the final chest measurement. This is because the edging can add at the minimum 2 more inches. If you would like more width at the chest you can continue until the combined width of both the folded hexagon is 4″ less than the final chest measurement.

I would also take the liberty to say to stop making the hexagon once you have reached 1/4th the chest measurement that gives a comfortable fit. You can add length to sleeve and the body later after you have seamed both the hexagons. If not the cardigan becomes too boxy.

Make a second hexagon to match the first ! Fasten off and weave in ends . We will seam using fresh yarn.

If you are using a different yarn and hook to match , follow the same instructions until you reach 1/4th of the chest measurement that you wish to reach for a comfortable fit.

That’s it for week 1. Hope I have explained things clearly:). If not I am just a comment/dm away:)
