Happy Navaratri

Navratri is a time for all things beautiful!

It’s a time for music and dance!

In the south, we call it Navratri Golu.

It is a tradition where families arrange an odd number of steps, decorated with dolls and figurines, to celebrate the victory of good over evil during the Navratri festival. The dolls depict religious deities, mythological stories, and scenes from daily life, symbolizing the presence of the three divine goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswati and Durga.

Golu is an opportunity for families to showcase their creativity by crafting themes related to ancient epics, historical events, or even contemporary social issues.

As a crochet designer, I grab this opportunity of Golu and try to infuse the spirit of Navaratri into my patterns.

I pick the colour associated with the nine days and use that as my point of reference.

Yes, I know – it’s a marketing gimmick to associate a colour to these days. But why give up on the opportunity to play with colours? 🤓

The past two years I have earnestly engaged with this activity. Last year I designed 9 unique patterns for crochet purses (they are available for free on my blog winkwink). You can find them umder posts titled as Gratitude Day:)

This year I wanted to do something different.

I picked out the colours matching the colour of the day to create one, giant mandala pattern. I took the creative liberty to include 2 other shades in each colour family, I hope you won’t mind 😉

As you can see, it is an eclectic collection of the different cotton that are in my stash. So come on, grab your favourite colour and crochet a family size festive mandala with me!

It’s going to be a mystery design and each day we will work with the colour of the day and add 3 or 4 rounds to the pattern.

At the end of the mystery cal, the pattern will be available for free on my blog. So if you are not a mystery lover, you can wait for the completed pattern before you decide to make it. That being said, I’d highly encourage you to just jump in and join the fun!

See you there and happy crafting!
