It is summer in the West and we in India are just happy to see the Sun hop over there to warm the hearts and bring some cheer! An early monsoon marked the end of summer where I live and I am a happy camper!
What does one do in Summer? While growing up, we would look forward to Summer as it meant time for family vacation, reading novels, bingeing on mangoes, playtimes that did not end at sunset and a whole lot of fun!
Once we crossed the school going age , summers grew more hotter, or rather we began to notice the heat more as we lost our childlike innocence to the mundane stuff! During one such summer was when I picked up crochet and rekindled my joy. Cannot go on vacation? no problem , I can crochet all day listening to some audio books or music!
With this thought in mind, I sat down to design a quick and easy project for this $2 Pattern sale event hosted by Audrey of CanoemtnDesigns
I started with a leaf motif, thinking I would make a bookmark or perhaps a headband. I had finished 6 motifs when they summoned the household Goddess (aka moi) for .. yes you guessed it right .. some mundane work! As I put it down I noticed that it formed a cute circle with the star shape being formed in the white space!

It was such a “eureka!” moment for me! I got back to it as quickly as I could , joined the first and last motif and set about stiffening the piece. Alas , this 4 ply cotton I had used did not absorb the starch. So back it went into the bowl for a double strong dip. This time it took longer to dry but it stayed stiff! Just to make sure I would be able to hang it , I attached a metal ring to the piece by using the single crochet stitch. A few beads later it was looking perfect! Time to put it up, ready to catch some sun’s rays!
As always, I wanted to try making it with different threads and beads. This time I prestrung the beads and in one of them added the beads to the centre of each motif and in the other I added the bead between the motifs! A word of caution … get good quality beads! The red beads I used bled a little. Both these pieces held their shape with just the stiffening but I would recommend using rings to get a better shape and longer use:)
