June 2025! Half the year is already over and here at Yarny Notes I am continuing to play catch up with all the events that I am a part of.
Have you been following the #globalcrochetcollaboration ? No? Let me quickly recap:) 9 crochet designers from around the world have come together to bring you 3 free crochet patterns every month! We love to give back to the community, as a thank you, for supporting us and encouraging us when we bring out our patterns !

You can check all the free patterns that have been published so far, from my blog. Check for posts titled “Global Crochet Collaboration”
This month we have had Gemma of Concretegemscrochet publish her Ocean Coral Scarf!

Starting this week , you have yours truly presenting the Garden Fresh Placemat as the free crochet pattern for week 2 of this month!

I wanted a simple pattern that gives some texture and that can be completed in a weekend! I recently laid my hands on this beautiful Summer Bloom cotton and the yarn totally guided me as to what it wanted to become!
I combined the Variegated with a solid cotton in celery green colour , also from Ganga Yarns, This yarn is called Cotton Delight! Just right for this project! No affiliation with the yarn company , just happy with the products!
The Summer Bloom yarn is slightly thinner than the Cotton Delight but it did not make a difference to this project!
If you are not in India , the alternate yarns would be Paintbox Cotton, Lion Brand 24/7 cotton to name a couple or any 4 ply / 3 ply cotton yarn.
I would normally choose 4 mm for this yarn but as I was travelling I only had 3.5mm hook with me and I decided to use that.
Let’s get to the pattern without muct further ado!

Notes:
1: TrC is worked as follows – yo twice, insert hook in st indicated, yo pull up a loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) 3 times.
2: When you work the Trc , you will work by inserting the hook from behind the piece and into the stitch that is three rows below.
3: Work Pattern Repeat for Gauge as follows :
Row 1: Chain 10, 1 sc in the back bump of the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in the back bump of each of the next 8 chains. Turn – 9sc.
Row 2: Cdc in the first st, *ch1 , sk next st, dc in the next st, repeat from * till the end of row. Turn 5dc, 4 ch1 sp.
Row 3: Ch1, sc in the first st, 1 sc in each st and ch1 sp. Turn 9 sc.
Row 4: Cdc, 1 trc in the skipped st 3 rows below, 1 dc in the next st, repeat from * till end of row. 5dc, 4 trc.
The above 4 rows measure 2″ tall by 2″ wide. Gauge is not important for this project but if your gauge varies then remember your finished project will vary in size from the sample project.
4: Stitch count is given at the end of every row.
5: Chainless dc is used instead of the beginning ch3 . This is worked as follows:- ch1 , sc in the first st, sc in the side loop of the sc just made.
6: Change of colour is done on the last st of the even numbered rows as follows : work the last dc of the row until the last step, yo with the next colour and complete the stitch. Drop the first colour to the back. Do not cut the dropped yarn, pull it up behind the first st to anchor it when you turn to make the first st.
7: Each pattern repeat consists of 4 rows. Each pattern repeat starts on the right side and ends on the wrong side.
8: All even numbered rows are the wrong side.

Fasten off MC. Weave in the ends and block!
The reverse side of the placemat is beautiful too!

Here you have it a quick and easy project that is just right for Summer!
And if you are hard pressed for time, you can try the coaster version.
Just start with chain 22 and follow the instructions. My coaster has 3 pattern repeats and measures 5.5″ square. I used approx 13 yds of CC and 10 yds of MC for one coaster.
As you can see the right and the wrong side are equally enjoyable!

Stay tuned for the update on this post for the next free pattern from the Global Crochet Collaboration !
